Soil and climat


Saumur Champigny, Saumur Blanc, Cabernet de Saumur, Coteaux de Saumur, Saumur Brut... So many appelations for a single terroir! We have to admit that this region at the heart of the Loire Valley, jouxting the coteau, between Saumur and Montsoreau on the road of Chinon, is a very special terroir. Claude Bourguignon, microbiologist specialized in soil composition, found similarities with Vouvray, Chablis, Crayeuse Champagne ... wich actually came from the Parisian Basin before the first ice ages pulled the sea off.

The varietals


Both the varietals we planted are the noble varietals of the Loire Valley:
The Cabernet Franc for Saumur-Champigny, which is known for its ideal development on clay and limestone soils with a northern climate, and its delicate and elegant wines; the Chenin Blanc for the Saumur Blanc and Coteaux de Saumur: very typical of the region, its big “personality” wonderfully represents the soils of our vineyard.

Those two varietals are planted with at least 5000 vine-plants per hectare.

The Climate


The name Saumur Champigny, after Latin Campus Ignis, means « Fire field ». Indeed, the climate of the region is half oceanic, therefore quite mild and of steady temperature, but there is a microclimate over Saumur and Chinon, warmer and drier than the rest of the Val de Loire, with only 525 mm of yearly rainfall (national average being 900 mm). It enables us to produce great red wines, which need more sun than white wines.

We can explain this microclimate by the hills that protect our region from most of the large clouds coming from the ocean, located 150 km southwest.

The Soils


If the soil is composed of clay and limestone (from superior cretaceous), the subsoil results from sediments settled 80 to 90 million years ago, which allowed the formation of a hard chalk, white or light ochre: freestone. It enables the rain to moisturize the subsoil without making it full of water, as a sponge would do.

The limestone was used for the construction of hundreds of Chateaux along the Loire towards Nantes, but also up to England.

The caves thus created are ideal for the conservation of wine because of the temperatures, fresh and perfectly constant.

The Vineyard


The vineyard is grouped together on the coteau above the Château on the border of AOC Saumur-Champigny, and is located on the best soils of Parnay, around the Church and the former mill, towards the Loire.
The names of the parcels show the age of the place: Clos Saint-Père, Clos du Moulin, Clos Saillant, Clos Vert...

Sustainable Development


The domain has been into sustainable development for more than a decade now, and is awarded each year since 2000 when we joined the Terra Vitis label. Progressively and completely since 2009, all of our soils are worked on, without weed killer, insecticide nor chemical fertilizer.
